2006 Ford F-150 Timing Cover Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to Service and Repair the Engine Front Timing Cover on 2006 Ford F-150?
A: The first step for servicing and repairing the engine front cover starts with cleaning up the area to stop foreign substances from entering oil or coolant passages to avoid engine failure. The coolant pump alongside the camshaft synchronizer and crankshaft front seal need removal before disconnecting the CKP sensor electrical connector and removing wire harness retainers from engine front cover stud bolts. Follow oil draining with the installation of the drain plug while tightening it to 23 Nm (17 ft. lbs.). You should disconnect the oil filter and proceed to remove the two bolts which secure the oil pan to the engine front cover. First remove the retaining nut after which you should position the transmission coolant tube support bracket to the side. First remove the belt tensioner bolt together with the tensioner and next loosen the two upper bolts then a lower bolt at the rear of the power steering pump before pulling the pump out 25 mm (1 in). Separate the bolt and the A/C compressor and power steering pump bracket brace from its installation position. A hidden cap screw at the oil pump housing requires careful attention because damage to the engine front cover is possible. Identify the position of the four studs before removing them. It is necessary to install two measures: sealing off coolant and oil passages for contamination prevention and cleaning sealing surfaces using a plastic scraping tool and silicone gasket remover and metal surface preparation. Stuff the oil pan tightly with fresh shop towels after which you should seal off the oil and coolant passages. Use thread sealant on the front cover studs and cap screw threads before tightening them to 7 Nm (62 inch lbs.). Sanitizing and reapplying sealant to the sealing areas becomes necessary after four minutes elapse without securing the engine front cover. The engine front cover gasket should be installed while silicone gasket and sealant need to be applied to the oil pan. You should mount the engine front cover and coolant pump while following the correct fastener sequence and tightening capscrew No. 12 to 10 Nm (89 inch lbs.) and all other fasteners to 28 Nm (21 ft. lbs.). Before installing the transmission cooler tube bracket users should tighten the mounting nut to 20 Nm (15 lb-ft). Fasten the accessory drive belt tensioner first, followed by securing its bolt with 55 Nm (41 lb-ft). Then attach and tighten the two oil pan-to-engine front cover bolts to 10 Nm (89 inch lbs.). First install a new oil filter before tightening it to 16 Nm (12 ft. lbs.) and then connect the CKP sensor electrical connector while securing wiring harness retainers. Fasten the crankshaft front seal and the camshaft synchronizer and bolt down the coolant pump pulley by performing bolt torques to 10 Nm (89 inch lbs.). Install the A/C compressor together with the power steering pump pulley bracket brace using two bolts and two nuts before tightening bolts to 48 Nm and nuts to 25 Nm. Install the accessory drive belt and cooling fan components together with the fan shroud after filling the engine with new oil then completing the cooling system filling with a bleeding process.
