  • Q: How to service the shock absorber and spring assembly on a 2WD on 2005 Ford Five Hundred?
    A: A 2WD vehicle requires shock absorber and spring assembly service which starts with measuring the center-hub to fender-lip distance while the vehicle rests at a level position. First remove interior trim to reach the upper shock absorber nut before throwing away the nut. Move on by detaching the tire assembly along with the wheel. While operating on the rear brake caliper keep it supported without using the flexible hose and remove the guide-pin bolts before placing the caliper aside. Install the caliper with a torque of 31 Nm (23 ft. lbs.) after installation. Position a V-topped transmission jack vertically under the wheel knuckle at the trailing arm connection then lift the assembly while the toe-link becomes parallel to the ground surface. You should remove and discard the trailing arm-to-knuckle bolt before lowering the transmission jack to get access to the trailing arm-to-subframe bolt. After positioning the jack under the shock absorber mount you must lift it to compress the shock absorber and spring before removing the lower arm-to-knuckle bolt while loosening the lower arm-to-subframe bolt. The first step is to discard the lower shock absorber and spring assembly-to-lower arm bolt followed by swinging the lower arm downwards to extract both components. When installing the spring you should tape it to the upper rubber spring seat before placing it on the shock absorber while leaving the new lower arm-to-knuckle bolt unfastened. The transmission jack helps position the shock absorber and spring assembly correctly in reference to the upper mount before lowering the lower arm into place. The floor jack must go underneath the lower arm after you remove the jack and lower the vehicle somewhat. Support the movements by raising the lower arm until contact with the upper mount while leveraging the shock absorber into its proper place. Put in a new shock absorber nut before tightening it to 83 Nm (61 ft. lbs.) and reinstall the interior trim. Place the transmission jack under the wheel knuckle after raising the vehicle for another time. Then remove the lower shock absorber-to-knuckle bolt before installing shock absorber and spring into the lower arm and securing it with the bolt. Proceed by raising the jack to achieve the measurement of curb height at the wheel hub and tighten both the lower arm-to-subframe bolt and lower arm-to-knuckle bolt to 125 Nm (92 ft. lbs.) and 110 Nm (81 ft. lbs.). Using the jack raise it until the subframe bushing and trailing arm position aligns with each other. Secure the new trailing arm-to-subframe bolt with torque at 110 Nm (81 ft. lbs.) as well as the trailing arm-to-knuckle bolt at 105 Nm (77 ft. lbs.). Place the vehicle at a partial height and bolt in the brake caliper while installing guide pins before torquing these components to 31 Nm (23 ft. lbs.).
