2005 Ford Focus Brake Shoe Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to service and repair the brake shoes on 2005 Ford Focus?
A: The process begins with unhinging the parking brake control boot by removing its clip then pulling it above the parking brake control handle. After confirming the brakes are heat-safe you should position the parking brake control at the completely released setting. The parking brake cable tension must be lowered through two steps: first remove the retaining clip and secondly adjust the adjustment nut. The brake drum should get removed directly and not by using the hub retaining nut as this practice is unsafe. Detach the hold-down clips and pins from their positions while applying a suitable tool to keep the wheel cylinder pistons inside their wheel cylinder bore. Pull the lever towards the interior to free up the parking brake cable from the lever and remove the anchor block connection from the shoes. The first step involves disconnection of the primary shoe from strut and brake shoe adjuster through shoe outward pull and strut and adjuster separation. The support spring holds high tension in the strut so disconnect the secondary shoe by lowering the strut and unfastening the parking brake return spring. Apply silicone grease to the brake shoe contact points on the brake backing plate while cleaning and checking these sections after removing all foreign material. Make sure every mating surface has no debris until clean. Install the unit by executing the inverse removal sequence then properly set the internal auto-adjuster and place the brake shoes in the center of the brake drum before performing brake shoe adjustment.
