2005 Ford Focus Rear Crossmember Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to Service and Repair the Rear Crossmember on 2005 Ford Focus?
A: You need to remove all vehicle springs at the initial step when performing maintenance work on the rear cross-member. The stabilizer bar removal from rear lower arms of 3-door, 4-door and 5-door cars requires side-by-side detachment before the bar can be uninstalled with two bolts per side. Before removing the rear lower arms it is required to mark down the position of their adjustment cam relative to the crossmember. Proceed with caution on the front lower arm because it has the FRONT designation as you will need to remember this position for reinstallation. Disconnect the front lower arms and then separate the upper arms from their position on the wheel knuckles while documenting appropriate installation locations. Position the wheel knuckle with a suitable cable tie to avoid damage while using a transmission jack to lower the system and supporting the exhaust system with an axle stand. Sufficient operating space requires you to disengage the exhaust system from its hanger on the crossmember exhaust and drop it down. A proper transmission jack should support the crossmember while users remove it with three bolt-screws installed on both sides. Before lowering the jack position the transmission crossmember and then secure it with a combination of three bolts installed on each side. Proceed to reconnect the exhaust system to its position on the crossmember exhaust hanger insulator after removing the axle stand. The upper arm retaining bolts require only partial tightening at this time while installing the upper arms and connecting them to wheel knuckles. The installation of front lower arms requires proper alignment between the crossmember marks and the adjustment cam marks on the rear lower arm before final tightening. Append the rear lower arm and the stabilizer bar through two bolts which should be placed on each side. The 3-door and 4-door and 5-door models require spring installation and wheel knuckle attachment for the rear lower arms followed by adding stabilizer bar attachment to the rear lower arms. The final procedure for rear suspension tightening should start when the suspension reaches curb height and ends when application of vehicle weight causes the suspension to align at that height. This procedure includes the step of tightening both upper arm-to-crossmember retaining bolts and upper arm-to-wheel knuckle retaining bolts as well as front lower arm retaining bolts together with rear lower arm adjustment cam nuts and rear lower arm-to-wheel knuckle retaining bolts on both vehicle sides. Adjust the toe setting for the final check.
