2005 Ford Thunderbird Shock Absorber Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to Service the Front Shock Absorber on 2005 Ford Thunderbird?
A: Start the suspension strut service procedure by moving the vehicle into NEUTRAL position on the hoist setup. You should disconnect the right upper shock mount cover together with its retainers and also take off the left upper shock mount cover if they are installed. Do not untighten the center nut since it protects the upper spring mount and releasing it causes spring tension loss which leads to dangerous circumstances. Replace the shock absorber upper mount-to-body nuts with new ones while torquing them to 28 Nm (21 ft. lbs.). The hex-holding function allows for easy stud rotation prevention when you disconnect the stabilizer bar link-to-lower arm nut before you detach the bar link then tighten the new nut to 55 Nm (41 ft. lbs.). When you remove the shock absorber-to-lower arm nut and bolt the assembly should be separated to allow removal of the shock absorber along with its spring. The new bolt and nut needs to be tightened to 175 Nm (129 ft. lbs.) when reinstalling. The installation process requires double-checking for shock absorber lower bushing end caps which should remain in position before proceeding with the reverse uninstallation process. The proper retention and performance of suspension components depends on both new parts usage with identical part numbers and accurate torque application according to specifications.
