2005 Lincoln LS Battery Cable Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to service and repair the battery cables on 2005 Lincoln LS?
A: Begin the battery cable repair service by disconnecting the battery from the system. The battery ground cable servicing requires removing its bolt and two locators and cable followed by tightening the bolt to 12 Nm (9 lb-ft) torque during installation. When installing the positive battery cable in the luggage compartment you must open the rear battery junction box cover before removing the cable assembly nut and cable end to tighten the nut to 12 Nm (9 lb-ft). To remove the positive battery cable easily pull it out from both its locators at the cable assembly conduit and below the package tray. The passenger compartment operation requires seat(s) removal until you can access the positive battery cable then free the two locators from their position in the rear seat area before extracting the cable from the shield in the rear door opening. First remove the three screws from the positive battery cable shield that exists in the front door opening and the cable from that shield separately. The positive battery cable nut at the instrument panel should be removed first and tightened to 12 Nm (9 lb-ft) before taking out the rear positive battery cable assembly. During installation of the front positive battery cable in the engine compartment users must first take off the bulkhead positive battery cable nut cover followed by the nut and cable end while torquing the nut to 12 Nm (9 lb-ft). The body ground cable lead should be placed aside after disconnecting its electrical connector and removing the body ground cable bolt which must be tightened to 12 Nm (9 lb-ft) torque when installed. The harness bracket needs its screws removed while tightening at 6 Nm (53 lb-in) before taking out the bracket component. First remove the starter ground cable end along with the cable nut and tighten the nut to 25 Nm (18 lb-ft) at installation time and proceed by removing the starter solenoid positive cable end and cable nut which needs 12 Nm (9 lb-ft) tightening torque during installation. Disengage the starter solenoid wire cable nut while tightening its end to 6 Nm (53 lb-in) installation torque then dispose of the generator harness locator. A 3.9L engine requires generator removal while the technician positions the B+ cover to one side and disconnects the B+ cable nut while tightening the cable end to 7 Nm (62 lb-in) for the 3.0L or 8 Nm (71 lb-in) for the 3.9L. During the process completion reverse all steps of removal and then remove the engine compartment positive and ground cable assembly.
