2005 Lincoln LS Steering Knuckle Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to Service and Repair the Front Steering Knuckle on 2005 Lincoln LS?
A: The first step to service the front wheel knuckle requires wheel bearing and hub removal. The hex-holding function stops stud rotation so you can remove tie-rod end nuts but you should separately discard the end before disconnecting the tie-rod end from the wheel knuckle. Reinstall the end using a torque of 100 Nm (74 ft. lbs.) when complete. Use a suitable jack stand to carry the knuckle weight when the lower control arm is disconnected to protect the upper control arm. Before disconnecting the suspension lower arm from the knuckle tighten the new nut to 200 Nm (148 ft. lbs.). Utilize the hex-holding function to stop stud rotation during removal and diskarding of the lower ball joint-to-lower arm nut. The nut removal enables knuckle detachment from the control arm and new application of the knuckle-to-upper control arm nut requires a torque setting of 90 Nm (66 ft. lbs.). The knuckle needs proper support during attachment to the upper control arm to avoid damage to the structure. The installation of new nuts becomes necessary because the upper arm-to-knuckle nut, lower arm-to-knuckle nut, and tie-rod-to-knuckle nut use a torque prevailing design. Reinstall the tapered washer onto the ball joint before putting back the upper and lower control arms to the knuckle while following the previously used removal steps.
