2005 Mercury Montego Vapor Canister Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair the Vapor Canister on 2005 Mercury Montego?
A: The first step for EVAP canister service and repair requires the vehicle to be in neutral position and positioned on a hoist. To prevent electrical sparks you should detach the battery ground cable. All personal electronic devices should remain off-hand and both smoking and open flame use must be eliminated near fuel-related parts because highly flammable mixtures exist in that area. Proceed by cutting off the electrical cable from the EVAP canister vent solenoid along with the quick-connect fitting of the EVAP vapor tube. You must first remove the EVAP front fuel vapor tube from the dust box before removing the two required EVAP canister retaining nuts which should be tightened to 9 Nm (80 lb-in) after reinstallation. When replacing the EVAP canister install its retaining bolts with a torque of 9 Nm (80 lb-in). These bolts need to be installed to the same torque setting. Three pushpin retainers on the wire harness need release before the EVAP canister can be taken out. The installation process ends with performing both leakage tests and the evaporative emission remedy verification drive cycle after reversing the removal steps.
