How to Service and Repair the Steering Shaft on 2006 Ford E-250?

The steering column shaft service and repair procedure requires maintenance on the steering wheel position to straight-ahead while turning off the ignition switch to protect the Clock Spring; the Clock Spring removal follows for shaft rotation recentering. The non-commercial chassis requires the removal of the steering column shaft-to-steering gear pinch bolt as well as the separation of the shaft from the gear before reinstallation requires a pinch bolt torque of 28 Nm (21 ft. lbs.). Before repair disconnect the steering column dash panel seal from the dash panel. Then separate the lower steering column shaft from the coupler bolt and disconnect the middle shaft from the coupling point by compressing the shaft when required. Vehicles produced before 09/05/2005 need a coupler bolt torques setting of 28 Nm (21 ft. lbs.) yet vehicles designed after 09/05/2005 should have a 25 Nm (18 ft. lbs.) torque value. When finishing the repair of the steering column shaft dash panel seal and steering column shaft, move on to commercial chassis by disconnecting the steering column shaft-to-steering gear bolt then tightening it to 49 Nm (36 ft. lbs.) before reinstalling it. Cut off the connection between the steering column shaft and the steering column. Then disconnect the shaft from the steering column and take out the steering column shaft after you tighten the bolt to 49 Nm (36 ft. lbs.) before 09/05/2005 or 40 Nm (30 ft. lbs.) afterward. The installation ends with the opposite steps to removal.
