2006 Ford Escape Timing Cover Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair the Engine Front Timing Cover on 2006 Ford Escape?
A: The process to fix an engine front cover requires dirt-free conditions because dirt spots may lead to engine failure. Placing the vehicle on a hoist in neutral position should begin every service process followed by evacuation of fuel system pressure. Start by disconnecting the ground cable from the battery then strip the crankshaft front seal while removing five bolts, pin-type retainer and the RH lower splash shield. The service procedure begins by removing the generator upper air duct bolt along with the air duct before continuing with removal of the generator shield pin-type retainer followed by its bolt and shield. Start by detaching the 2 generator bolts and the generator stud along with nut before setting the generator to the side. First detach the LH and RH valve covers along with the engine support insulator then proceed to eliminate the accessory drive belt tensioner bolt and the idler pulley bolt. Following HO2S electrical connector bracket nut removal you should set the bracket aside before disconnecting CMP and CKP sensor electrical connectors. The power steering pump requires removal of 3 bolts which should keep the power steering pressure tube bolt installed in the pump housing as you place the pump aside. Then set aside the speed control actuator after you remove its 3 nuts when equipped. Disassemble the 2 oil pan-to-front cover bolts followed by removing all 13 bolts together with 3 stud bolts which requires discarding the gaskets. Induce new gaskets by cleaning all sealing surfaces with metal surface cleaner through application of a plastic scraping tool. Use 6 mm (0.23 inch) diameter dots of silicone gasket and sealer on the cylinder block surfaces and lower cylinder block and cylinder head and oil pan mating areas before installing the engine front cover and tightening its bolts within four minutes post-sealing. Install the engine front cover onto its proper position and use a specified bolt sequence to tighten them to 25 Nm (18 ft. lbs.) before torquing the 2 oil pan-to-front cover bolts to the same force. Draining the engine oil requires uninstalling the oil pan plug before reinstallation with a torque of 26 Nm (19 ft. lbs.). Place the power steering pump in its correct position before you install the 3 bolts and apply torque of 25 Nm (18 ft. lbs.). Connect the HO2S bracket with its nut secured at 10 Nm (89 inch lbs.) after joining the CMP and CKP electrical connectors. First, tighten the idler pulley bolt to 25 Nm (18 ft. lbs.) while installing the pulley and next fasten the accessory drive belt tensioner with its bolt to 45 Nm (33 ft. lbs.). The speed control actuator and its 3 nuts should be installed next to the LH and RH valve covers and engine support insulator. Secure the generator by tightening both its stud to 7 Nm (62 inch lbs.) and stud nut to 47 Nm (35 ft. lbs.) then torque the 2 generator bolts to the same value. Place the generator shield and bolt together with the pin-type retainer then fasten these elements to 4 Nm (35 inch lbs.). After that add the generator upper air duct along with its bolt and secure them to 4 Nm (35 inch lbs.). Finally you should install the RH lower splash shield by tightening its 5 bolts and pin-type retainer to 8 Nm (71 inch lbs.), then reinstall the crankshaft front seal, fill the engine with clean engine oil before reconnecting the battery ground cable.
