2006 Ford Taurus Shift Cable Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair the Floor Shift Selector Lever Shift Cable on 2006 Ford Taurus?
A: The service process for the shift interlock cable that operates the floor shift selector lever requires the center console removal as the first step. Detach the shift cable from its base on the lever before you can pull the entire transaxle range selector lever assembly free from its housing by pressing the tab on the cable. The repair requires you to detach the rear air distribution duct then free up the rubber grommet at the bulkhead by drawing the passenger compartment insulation. When operating on the manual lever, remove the shift cable by tightening the cable to 20 Nm (15 ft. lbs.) before installing it again. Correction of the shift cable requires pressing the tabs to separate the cable from the transmission shift cable bracket and driving the cable inside the vehicle for extraction during removal. Inserting the shift cable requires floor access from inside the vehicle while placing the lever in overdrive and attaching it to the selector lever. The last step before installation involves positioning the manual lever at overdrive while you attach the shift cable to the manual lever.
