2007 Ford Taurus Shift Cable Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to Service the Shift Cable and Bracket for a Column Shift on 2007 Ford Taurus?
A: You must detach the LH lower instrument panel trim before servicing the shift cable and bracket for a column shift. Install this panel at 7 Nm (62 inch lbs) torque. A screwdriver should be employed on the left side of the column to pry the shift cable free from the pivot ball. The shift cable can be withdrawn from the retaining bracket after unlocking its locking tab. Proceed to remove the cruise control actuator starting from the engine compartment. Unscrew the shift cable from the dash panel grommet and take off the manual control lever attaching nut which requires a torque of 20 Nm (15 foot pounds) upon reinstall. The locking tab must be lifted while using upward force on the shift cable to separate it from the transmission shift cable bracket before discarding the locking clip. Pull the shift cable through the dash panel opening as the last step. When installing, reverse the removal process and implement a new locking clip by adjusting the shift cable as required.
