2007 Lincoln Town Car Air Bag Sensor Parts Q&A

  • Q: What Precautions Should Be Taken When Servicing the Front Air Bag Sensor on 2007 Lincoln Town Car?
A: Safety glasses must be worn during front impact severity sensor service to prevent injuries from possible air bag deployment accidents. Vehicle sensor orientation must be correct to operate properly but inspection of sensor mounting brackets and wiring pigtails should happen for any damage after a collision even when air bags did not deploy. Memory saver devices should not be used because they present personal injury hazards. The restraints control module (RCM) fuse removal that causes the air bag warning lamp illumination represents normal behavior as it does not indicate any system faults with the ignition switch ON. A vehicle can be returned to customers only after validating that the SRS system operates without defects using new parts as the repair method unless problems persist in which case the first component will be reinstalled to recheck the diagnostic results. The front impact severity sensors are installed on each side of the hood latch which sits on the radiator core support. The first step requires depowering the system followed by hood opening and removal of pin-type retainers and radiator opening cover assembly. To proceed move the bolt out of the right-hand horn and bracket assembly while disconnecting its electrical connector before removing the horn and bracket assembly. Start by removing the bolts attached to the front impact severity sensor followed by disconnection of its electrical connector then removing the sensor altogether. When installing the sensor follow the removal sequence in reverse order while tightening bolts to 12 Nm (9 lb-ft) then reactivate the system.
