2006 Lincoln Town Car Automatic Transmission Oil Cooler Line Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to Backflush and Clean the Automatic Transmission Oil Cooler Lines on 2006 Lincoln Town Car?
A: Starting the cleaning process requires a vehicle hoist in neutral position with the vehicle positioned on it. The cooling system requires thorough cleaning from all contaminants especially metal molecules and clutch particles to stop problems from recurring in the transmission. Attempts at repairing the oil-to-air (OTA) fluid cooler are not possible because of its thermostatic bypass valve thus requiring a complete replacement when seeing leakage or major metallic failure or significant wear. A suitable cleaner should be used to clean fluid cooler tubes while testing the equipment's fluid flow rate after replacement of any tainted flush equipment filter. The cleaning operation requires the following steps: first detach the tubes from the OTA cooler and replace it with a rubber hose after which connect the tank pressure line to the longest steel transmission return tube and at the same time install a return hose connected to the shorter pressure tube before directing its outlet toward the fluid tank reservoir. Turn on the pump and set it to run with fluid circulation for at least 5 minutes during which time alternate between on and off position to remove contaminants. Finishing the procedure requires you to turn off the pump before removing the pressure hose from the transmission cooler return tube. Purge all fluid from the cooler(s) and tubes by blowing with pressurized air followed by rubber hose removal from the steel tube leading to the OTA cooling tubes. Next, reintegrate the OTA cooler system tubes. The appearance of clean fluid during flushing does not rule out complete contamination removal; therefore it is necessary to install a new OTA.
