2006 Lincoln Town Car Differential Cover Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to service the Differential Cover on 2006 Lincoln Town Car?
A: Service the differential housing cover after turning off all electrical power to the air suspension by using the air suspension switch which stands left from the luggage compartment to prevent air spring inflation or deflation. The vehicle must stand in neutral before hoisting it and removing the differential housing cover by uninstalling cover bolts to drain lubricant from the differential housing space. Both differential housing and its cover require cleaning of their machined areas until they have no oil residue and rear axle containment should be provided during installation to stop contamination. The installation of the differential housing cover requires immediate application of a constant bead of silicone gasket and sealant before it can be put into place to prevent additional sealant usage. Position the cover first and bolt it down together with the axle tag bolts which should be torqued to 45 Nm (33 ft. lbs.) with a star-shaped pattern. Prior to removing the axle fill plug on Traction-Lok axles it is required to add 118 ml (4 oz) of additive friction modifier to the rear axle while ensuring the tool recess remains clean for proper engagement. The required lubricant amount should be added to the rear axle until it reaches 5.0 pints (2.37 liters). Then apply 30 Nm of torque (22 foot pounds) to secure the fill plug. It is necessary to reactivate air suspension prior to lowering the vehicle if the system is present in your vehicle.
