2007 Mercury Mountaineer Drive Shaft Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to Service and Repair a Two-Piece Rear Wheel Drive Shaft on 2007 Mercury Mountaineer?
A: First position the vehicle on a hoist in NEUTRAL position to serve the two-piece driveshaft of rear-wheel drive vehicles. During reinstallation replace the nuts from the driveshaft center bearing bracket to a torque specification of 55 Nm (41 ft. lbs). Both driveshaft and extension housing require index-marks on their faces: first between differential pinion flange and universal joint flange then between transmission output shaft and transmission extension housing. Identify these index-marks before driveshaft removal. For vehicles with a 4.6L engine, also index-mark the front universal joint flange to the transmission output flange. The four transmission output shaft flange bolts should be removed before installation. New bolts must be torqued to 112 Nm (83 ft. lbs). During installation, tightening new bolts to 112 Nm (83 ft. lbs) is required for the drive pinion flange bolts which need to be removed along with the four driveshaft flange bolts from the drive pinion flange. Drivers should use a suitable tool instead of hitting the driveshaft and its elements because they need to carefully pry on marked flange areas to disconnect the driveshaft from the differential pinion or transmission output flange. You should guide the driveshaft towards the back section of your vehicle when placing the front section above the frame crossmember before reversing all actions for completion.
