- Q: How to Service and Repair a Control Arm While Ensuring Safety and Proper Installation on 2007 Ford Crown Victoria?A: The first service step for a lower control arm requires turning off electrical power to the air suspension system to avoid unintentional air spring pressure changes that might shift the vehicle while working and result in injuries. Depowering fire suppression systems must always be performed before starting service and repair work. Place the vehicle into the neutral position while located on a hoist. Start by removing the old lower ball joint nut along with its installation of a new one secured to a torque of 150 Nm (111 lb-ft). The procedure requires replacement of the shock absorber lower nut along with the flag bolt by installing new hardware that needs to be secured with 235 Nm (173 lb-ft) torque. You should not touch the cam bolt to protect the steering bellows boot so replace the lower control arm cam bolt nut with a new one while tightening it to 238 Nm (176 lb-ft). Install brand new bolts on the lower arm bushing bracket and tighten them to 90 Nm (66 lb-ft). Set aside both steering gear nuts before installing fresh ones with a torque of 103 Nm (76 lb-ft). To access the steering gear cam bolt you must first remove its power steering rack studs and move the steering gear upward. Install a new cam bolt and tighten it to 30 Nm (22 lb-ft). Loosen all nuts and bolts included in the lower arm and cam bolt and rear bushing nut and shock absorber lower nut and flag bolt before fully tightening the parts while the installation procedure is finished and the vehicle rests with weight on its tire assemblies. When using a new lower control arm the bushing retaining nut requires 175 Nm (128 lb-ft) torque. In the last step check the front end alignment then repower the fire suppression system if present.
