- Q: What precautions should be taken when servicing a side air bag module on 2007 Ford Escape?A: Wear safety glasses before servicing any side air bag module for protection from accidental deployment incidents. Front your body during module handling and keep the module air bag surface pointed toward the opposite direction from yours along with placing them away from the cover tear seam. Hand washing procedures must follow deployment to eliminate remaining sodium hydroxide on hands. Stabbing the connectors of an air bag module should be avoided because it might trigger the air bag system. Sidelight air bag modules acquire new replacement units when their protective covers show damage though the front seat back cover may get cleaning instead of replacement when its installation features side air bags. The supplemental restraint system (SRS) needs disability activation before performing service work on seats containing SRS components. The RCM fuse removal generates an air bag warning lamp illumination which constitutes regular operating behavior even if the ignition switch is ON. The installation of a new seat back pad together with trim cover and side air bag module is required with additional replacement of the seat back frame when air bag deployment occurs. Lift the hook and loop retainer along with the deployment chute J-clip from the side air bag module and allow them to pass through the seat back foam opening. Unfasten the two harness retainers connected to the side air bag module then remove its securing nuts. Thoroughly check for foreign objects in both mounting surfaces and deployment chute of the new side air bag module then verify it shows no signs of damage. Place the new side air bag module in position while tightening its nuts to 5 Nm (44 lb-in). After that mount the wiring harness retainers. The technician must pull down the seat trim cover to verify the deployment chute has no damage and its correct installation. The deployment chute gets installed by placing J-clips along the module before secure hook and loop fastener then reattach the seat trim cover. After reclining the seat entirely you must fasten the J-clips on the seat back trim cover before raising the seat up to vertical position. The manual control knob needs to be replaced before continuing. The side air bag electrical connector must be connected after which the safety belt buckle pretensioner bolt requires a torque of 40 Nm (30 lb-ft) and users can reinstall the inboard seat cushion side shield and screw before reinstalling the front seat while powering the system back on.
