There are two different procedures to activate or deactivate the air bag restraint system which need either front seat removal or not. The initial procedure serves to test or fix seat side air bag problems and all in-seat components that affect seats with air bags because seat extraction becomes necessary for these repairs. Before deactivating the supplemental restraint system make sure to use diagnostic tools and deactivate the SRS. A one-minute wait occurs after battery ground cable removal to empty the back up power supply in the RCM (restraints control module). Disconnect the driver air bag module electrical connector by accessing it through the access panel which is located at the bottom of the
Steering Wheel. A tool 418-F468 of the restraint system should be attached to the driver air bag module connector at the
Clock Spring first before removing the passenger air bag while reattaching the same device to the harness side of the passenger air bag module connector. Front seat removal and attachment of diagnostic tools 418-F470 and 418-F468 will be needed to work on electrical connectors for both passenger and driver side air bags and safety belt buckles when these components exist. The battery ground cable requires reconnection when all diagnostics and repairs have been done. To restore power discard the ground cable from the battery for one minute until you confirm the back up energy drain is complete. Set aside all diagnostic systems which check the restraint components before connecting the air bag module and safety belt buckle components. Reconnect the affected front seat featuring pretensioner seat belt buckle wires and proceed with connector installation if the system includes both air bag modules for the driver and passenger. Wait one minute while verifying the system functionality after reconnecting the battery ground cable.
