2007 Ford Focus Oil Pan Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to service and repair the oil pan on 2007 Ford Focus?
A: The first step to repair or service the oil pan requires positioning the vehicle on a hoist in neutral position. Start by removing the battery tray and detaching the 2 positive battery cable pin-type retainers which you should place to the side. Then move forward with separating the transmission connector wire harness pin-type retainer along with placing it safely to the side. Begin the oil pan service by removing both nuts securing the heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) and catalyst monitor sensor wire connector bracket. This procedure must be followed by loosening the upper bellhousing-to-engine bolt and stud bolt by 5 mm (0.19 inch) to safeguard the transmission from damage. Proceed by detaching the oil level indicator while removing its tube before loosening all bellhousing-to-engine bolts located in front (3 units for manual transmission or 2 units for automatic transmission) to a gap of 5 mm (0.19 inch). Next address the rear lower engine-to-bellhousing bolt and stud bolt with similar loosening. Unfasten the 2 bellhousing-to-oil pan bolts while also removing the 2 oil pan-to-bellhousing bolts to permit sliding the transmission 5 mm (0.19 inch) rearward. Before proceeding with oil draining operations you must first remove the accessory drive belt splash shield retaining bolts and drain engine oil while installing the drain plug and tightening it to 28 Nm (21 ft. lbs.). Unbolt the 4 bolts linking the engine front cover to the oil pan while also removing the 13 oil pan securing bolts. Installation requires surface cleaning along with inspection and the omission of metal scrapers and abrasive tools to prevent leakage development. The effective period for securing the oil pan after applying the sealant reaches 10 minutes. Failure to secure it during this timeframe requires cleaning the sealing area with metal surface cleaners and waiting for it to dry. The application of 0.09 inch (2.5 mm) silicone gasket and sealant should be performed in two distinct dimensions along the oil pan's mating surfaces with the engine block and front engine cover. The engine operator should place the oil pan onto position before using a finger to tighten the bolts. The initial step should involve torquing the engine front cover-to-oil pan bolts to 10 Nm (89 inch lbs.) which will ensure a proper alignment of the oil pan with the engine block. Tighten the oil pan bolts in their specified sequence to reach 25 Nm torque (18 foot lbs torque). Install and tighten the accessory drive belt splash shield along with its two bolts to 9 Nm (80 inch lbs.). A sequential tightening process of the front bellhousing-to-engine lower bolts alongside the rear engine-to-bellhousing lower bolts will enable transmission and engine assembly while using torque to a level of 48 Nm (35 ft. lbs.). Start by tightening the remainder of lower front bellhousing-to-engine bolt(s) together with the rear engine-to-bellhousing stud bolt to 48 Nm (35 ft. lbs.). After that, torque up the 2 bellhousing-to-oil pan bolts and the 2 oil pan-to-bellhousing bolts to 48 Nm (35 ft. lbs.). The transmission setup requires an installation of the oil level indicator and tube followed by top bellhousing-to-engine bolt and stud bolt tightening to 48 Nm (35 ft. lbs.). Use the provided 2 nuts to fasten the HO2S and catalyst monitor sensor wire connector bracket at 25 Nm (18 ft. lbs.) before securing the transmission connector wire harness pin-type retainer along with the 2 positive battery cable pin-type retainers. After reinstalling the battery tray complete the procedure by adding clean engine oil to the system.
