2007 Lincoln Town Car Clock Spring Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: What Precautions Should Be Taken When Servicing the Clock Spring Assembly on 2007 Lincoln Town Car?
A: Throughout Clock Spring assembly servicing always protect your eyes with safety glasses because of air bag deployment risk and use a functioning air bag module that points air bag and trim cover away from your body. The system power needs to be disabled while taking out the driver air bag module. The wheels should be positioned straight ahead before you remove the steering wheel. Before taking off the Clock Spring apply two pieces of masking tape which will stop its accidental rotation during the removal process. Complete the tilt steering column adjustment toward maximum height to remove the lower and upper steering column shrouds and then take off the tilt lever followed by the lower steering column shroud screws. Unhook the retainers keeping the upper steering column shroud and take out the shrouds from both sides. After disconnecting the Clock Spring electrical connector you must remove the retaining clips while removing the Clock Spring from the steering column. Vehicles with new Clock Springs must have their keys removed during rotor centralization because rotation must be prevented. When recentering a rotor require vehicle owners to first turn it counterclockwise until it stops before turning clockwise until arrows match properly and finishing by executing two complete clockwise rotations to achieve the center point while making sure the rotor stays steady during this step. The repair maintenance of a Clock Spring requires removal of retaining tape without sphere movement. The Clock Spring should have its flat sides lined up with the flat sides of the steering column while sliding it onto the column until retaining tabs lock into place. First install the electrical connector of the Clock Spring then place the upper steering column shroud before inserting the column shift lever boot whenever it is present. The system restart requires you to complete the following sequential steps: install lower steering column shroud and fix it with three screws, install tilt column lever and steering wheel and driver air bag module.
