2008 Ford Crown Victoria Shift Cable Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair the Shift Cable and Bracket for a Column Shift on 2008 Ford Crown Victoria?
A: Beginning the process of servicing or repairing the shift cable and bracket of a column shift vehicle requires disabling electrical power to the air suspension system to avoid unintended air spring changes that might shift the car during work leading to severe injuries. You should operate the air suspension switch and set it to off mode when it exists in your vehicle. The service necessitates lifting the vehicle into neutral position to disconnect the shift cable starting with the manual control lever followed by the cable bracket. First disconnect the shift cable retainer before unclipping the cable from its upward-positioned engine compartment clips. Then remove the bolts which secure the transmission bracket and discard the shift cable retainer once more. The shift cable requires removal from its bulkhead clip before the operator detaches it from the steering column framework by detaching it from both the transmission shift lever arm and support components and the steering column bracket. Repeat the discarding of the retainer. Push the rubber grommet from the engine area through the bulkhead and take out the shift cable from the passenger side. Place the new shift cable through the bulkhead opening which leads to the transmission while making sure the rubber grommet seats correctly. Use a tool to lock the shift cable locking tabs before fitting the end of the cable onto the ball stud and pushing it into the bracket. Verify the lock by pulling on the cable. The shift cable needs installation at both the steering column as well as the transmission shift lever arm and support while using a new retainer between these two connections. Step one involves placing the shift lever at position (D) before adding a 1.4 kg (3 lb) weight to it. Secure the shift cable to the bulkhead routing clip then position the shift cable bracket and tighten all bolts to 28 Nm (21 lb-ft). The cable locking tabs must be secured and the cable end needs to be correctly mounted on the ball stud. Before attachment to the manual control lever we must first connect the shift cable to the shift cable bracket. A new shift cable retainer should be installed to enable cable connection with shift cable bracket before attaching it to both upward clips in the engine compartment. Use necessary adjustments to modify the shift cable. Follow all safety warnings to repower the fire suppression system in vehicles where such systems are present. When the vehicle settles on the ground after all adjustments are finished, it is time to turn on electrical power to the air suspension system if it is present.
