2008 Ford E-150 Clock Spring Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair the Clock Spring Assembly on 2008 Ford E-150?
A: The process for repairing or serving the Clock Spring assembly starts with removing both the driver air bag module and the steering column opening lower finish panel by following the retainer clips. Detach first the pin-type retainer with its electrical connector from the panel reinforcement after which you should uninstall the two screws and data link connector (DLC) elements. Disassemble the panel reinforcement by removing its six bolts before you disconnect the Clock Spring electrical connectors rooted at the bottom of the steering column. Reactivate the road wheels directly in front before you detach the steering wheel assembly. Begin by loosening the shank handle on the tilting steering wheel and follow it up with removing the ignition switch lock cylinder after setting the ignition to RUN position then pushing the cylinder release tab and pulling the cylinder out. First disconnect the three screws securing the lower steering column shroud followed by the upper one. To prevent rotation of the Clock Spring center rotor you must affix tape over it. Three clips need release to detach wire clips from the steering column before threading the wiring through the panel to remove the Clock Spring. When installing with new hardware the sealing key must be removed and the rotor needs to stay in the central position. To recenter a Clock Spring position keep the outer housing stationary while rotating the inner rotor clockwise until resistance is felt followed by counterclockwise rotation of 2.25 turns to reach the center point. It is essential to remove the tape from the Clock Spring without letting the component move. Insert the Clock Spring rotor flats onto the steering column shaft while pressing it into place at the three positions through 6 and 12 and 3 o'clock. The wiring needs to pass through the instrument panel while retaining clips get attached and the key-in-ignition warning indicator switch requires installation. First reinstall both steering column shrouds while making sure the ignition switch lock cylinder rests completely inside its seat before verifying its operational functionality. Put back the tilt wheel shank handle followed by the steering wheel whenever possible. The electrical connectors of the Clock Spring need installation alongside the pin-type retainers. Complete the installation by fastening the six bolts into the lower finish panel reinforcement before installing the DLC while reconnecting its electrical connector and pin-type retainer and then installing the lower finish panel and reattaching the driver air bag module.
