2008 Ford E-150 Differential Cover Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair the Differential Cover on 2008 Ford E-150?
A: When servicing and repairing the differential housing cover start by jacking or hoisting the vehicle followed by installing safety stands under the frame rails and allowing the axel to drop when lowering the lift. Differential housing cover service begins with removing its 10 bolts and draining the lubricant before removing the cover. The service requires removing all visible gasket material from both the differential housing cover and the differential housing. To properly attach the differential housing cover apply a continuous thread of silicone rubber sealant to the mounting surface right after installation because waiting past 15 minutes will require new sealant. Secure the cover through two bolts positioned at 8 o'clock and 2 o'clock from where you will begin installing remaining eight bolts in an evenly alternating pattern until torqued to recommended specifications. You should torque Grade 5 bolts to 47 Nm (35 lb-ft) yet torque Grade 8 bolts to 61 Nm (45 lb-ft). The technician should remove the differential housing cover fill plug and wait for a full one-hour cure time whenever possible before lubricating with the correct fluid type up to the necessary amount. Follow up by installing the fill plug before tightening it to 34 Nm (25 lb-ft).
