2007 Ford E-150 Differential Cover Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the Differential Cover on 2007 Ford E-150?
A: The first step when servicing or repairing the differential housing cover includes hoisting the vehicle to a height or lifting the rear end using a jack after installing safety stands under frame rails before lowering the hoist or jack so the rear axle drops into the rebound position. Empty the differential housing cap of its oil while you remove all gasket remnants from both differential housing components. The mounting surface should receive cleaning on both differential housing elements with an appropriate solvent to eliminate all oil film residue. For the differential housing cover silicone rubber sealant functions as the gasket material which must be applied as a continuous bead to the mounting surface and the cover needs installation within 15 minutes to prevent new sealant requirements. Two bolts should be threaded into the differential housing cover at the 8 o'clock and 2 o'clock positions to help position the cover before completing installation of the remaining bolts with alternate and equal tightening steps. Use a torque wrench to reach a tightening values of 47 Nm for Grade 5 bolts and 61 Nm for Grade 8 bolts. The specified lubricant must enter the axle right after one hour of cure time during which you need to operate the vehicle before vehicle lowering.
