2008 Ford E-150 Exhaust Pipe Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to Service and Repair the Crossover Exhaust Pipe on a Stripped Chassis with a 5-Speed Transmission on 2008 Ford E-150?
A: The first step for exhaust crossover pipe servicing on stripped chassis with 5-speed transmission includes parking the car in neutral position on a hoisting system. A safety stand should be used to maintain the muffler and tailpipe assembly and catalytic converter. The service technician should lift the front muffler and tailpipe isolators and remove all extension pipe isolators when present. Three exhaust Y-pipe-to-catalytic converter nuts should be removed followed by discarding them while taking off the exhaust Y-pipe-to-catalytic converter support bracket that requires new nuts tightened to 40 Nm (30 lb-ft). Install the catalytic converter with the muffler and tailpipe assembly adjusted towards the rear of the exhaust Y-pipe by discarding the gasket. Detach both heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) and catalyst monitor sensor electric connectors. Use new bolts to fasten the two left-hand and one right-hand heat shield-to-crossmember bolts before tightening them to 10 Nm (89 lb-in). During assembly replace the two crossmember-to-rear transmission mount nuts by tightening them to 70 lb-ft (95 Nm). Install the transmission crossmember using safety stands while attaching it to frame supports and fasten it with new transmission crossmember-to-frame bolts that must get tightened to 81 Nm (60 lb-ft) torques. Surprisingly enough you will need to discard the four exhaust Y-pipe-to-exhaust manifold nuts during pipe removal. Following pipe extraction you should replace these nuts along with new ones which require a torque of 40 Nm (30 lb-ft) during the reassembly. This procedure finishes the installation through its reversed steps.
