2008 Ford Explorer Front Cross-Member Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to Service the Rear Crossmember and Front Cross-Member for Transmission Support on 2008 Ford Explorer?
A: Service of the transmission support crossmember requires that the vehicle stays in neutral while positioned on a hoist. The first step involves uninstalling the four transfer case skid plate bolts until you remove the transfer case skid plate. When reinstalling the skid plate tightness should be set to 15 Nm (11 lb-ft). Begin by disconnecting the right-hand heat shield bolt then reinstall it at 18 Nm (13 lb-ft) torque for both bolts which lead to the left-hand heat shield. A suitable jack should support the transmission before removing its mount nuts to be torqued at 90 Nm (66 lb-ft) during assembly. The six bolts attached to the transmission crossmember need to be removed during this step yet must be tightened to 80 Nm (59 lb-ft) when reinstalling them. You should first handle the two upper nuts and two bolts from the transmission crossmember before installing these fasteners with a torque setting of 143 Nm (105 lb-ft). To reinstall the transmission crossmember you need to perform the reverse steps of removal.
