2008 Ford F-150 Oil Pan Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to service and repair the oil pan on 2008 Ford F-150?
A: Start pan services by placing the vehicle into neutral gear position on a hoist. Set the starter aside to drain the engine oil and return it to position by screwing the drain plug to 23 Nm (17 lb-ft) torque. The installation process begins by taking off four crossmember bolts along with three different oil pan-to-transmission fasteners. The two oil pan-to-engine front cover bolts need special attention because they have defined installation positions. Follow this step by removing 17 bolts and discarding the oil pan rear seal as well as the oil pan itself. Clean the sealing surfaces during installation using only silicone gasket remover together with a plastic scraping tool because metal scrapers and abrasive tools might create scratches that cause leaks. Clean all old sealant residues by following the instructions for silicone gasket remover while utilizing a plastic scraping tool. Future oil leakage can be prevented by removing the sealant and cleaning the sealing areas again when the oil pan stays unsecured for more than four minutes. The installation process requires silicone gasket application and sealant on the oil pan sealing areas followed by mount of the new oil pan rear seal combined with the rear main bearing cap. Silicone gasket and sealant need to be applied as a bead to the oil pan mating surface. Secure the oil pan by setting it in position then apply torque to the specified bolt sequence at 10 Nm (89 lb-in). Installation starts with fixing the 3 transmission to oil pan bolts to 34 Nm torque value before tightening the starter. Reposition the crossmember and fasten the 4 bolts before torquing them up to 115 Nm (85 lb-ft). Clean engine oil should be added to finish the filling process.
