2008 Ford F-150 Shock Absorber Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to remove and replace the front shock absorber and spring assembly on 2008 Ford F-150?
A: Safety measures start with preventing the shock absorber and strut tube from becoming exposed to heat or flames due to their gas pressure because this could lead to an explosion. The shock absorber rods and strut rods should remain out of reach from body parts because they might automatically extend. The performance depends heavily on suspension fasteners which require original part numbers or equivalent quality parts during reassembly process and proper torque values must be kept. First remove the wheel together with tire before discarding three shock absorber upper mount nuts. Tapping the spindle prevents hammering of the ball stud to separate the outer tie-rod end from the wheel spindle and you should discard the outer tie-rod end nut. Move the outer tie rod end until you can take out the shock absorber with spring assembly before discarding lower nut and bolt. When installing the shock absorber please do not torque the lower shock nut right away but install the shock absorber with spring assembly along with the lower bolt and nut loosely. Apply the holding feature when installing the outer tie-rod end nut because it will stop the ball stud from rotating as you tighten it to 150 Nm (111 lb-ft). Fasten the three shock absorber upper mount nuts by applying force of 48 Nm (35 lb-ft). Put the wheel back on and weigh down the vehicle on its wheels before tightening the shock absorber lower nut to 475 Nm (351 lb-ft).
