2008 Ford Focus Clutch Master Cylinder Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to service and repair the clutch master cylinder on 2008 Ford Focus?
A: Start the repair process of the clutch master cylinder by disconnecting the ground cable of the battery. The reservoir needs its brake fluid evacuated until reaching the MIN mark before you close the cap. Start by unscrewing the battery junction box (BJB) bolt and separate the BJB from its bracket while detaching both wiring harness retainer and the BJB retainer clip. Seal both hydraulic supply tubes while disconnecting the tubes which supply clutch pressure. The instrument panel lower panel can be removed by unfastening the fastener and releasing it after which detach the data link connector and hood release cable. Turn off the supply for the upper hydraulic tube through the front bulkhead next remove the retaining pin for the brake pedal actuating rod so disconnect all electrical connectors serving the starter safety switch and clutch position switch and speed control deactivation switch and brake lamp switch at the pedal assembly. Separate the switches on the pedal assembly followed by removing its four nuts and extraction of the assembly piece. The pedal assembly should be clamped into a vise to dismantle the master cylinder from the assembly by removing both clutch master cylinder bolts. The new clutch master cylinder requires attachment to the pedal assembly according to two bolt specifications of 9 Nm (80 inch lbs.) torque until complete lock while ensuring the brake pedal actuating rod retaining pin stays secured in position. Saunder number four clutch pedal assembly nuts to 23 Nm (17 ft. lbs.) torques and link the lower hydraulic tube to the front bulkhead. Test the plungers of the starter safety switch and speed control deactivation switch and brake lamp switch for correct dimensions to determine safe installation. Mount all the switches before setting the brake lamp switch at a counterclockwise position and the remaining switches at a clockwise position to prevent binding issues. After connecting electrical connectors to switches you must adjust the starter safety switch by pressing and releasing the clutch pedal before installing new O-ring seals. The installation ends by connecting the tubes between the clutch master cylinder and slave cylinder followed by attaching the hood release cable and data link connector to the instrument panel lower panel through screw and fastener installation. Attach the BJB to its mounting bracket followed by BJB bolt installation and complete the process by filling brake fluid to the MAX mark and bleeding the hydraulic clutch system before reconnecting the battery ground cable.
