2008 Ford Mustang Air Bag Parts Q&A

  • Q: How should one service the side air bag module to ensure safety and proper functionality on 2008 Ford Mustang?
A: A proper deployment procedure requires eye protection together with a side air bag module deployment door pointed in the opposite direction from your body for serious injury prevention. The seat side air bag cover must receive new installation of a replacement module immediately when damage exposes air bag materials. The backrest trim covers of front seats equipped with side air bags need immediate replacement following any damage yet you can clean those covers before replacing them. A scan tool should be used to reset the occupant classification sensor (OCS) system before beginning any work on the front passenger seat cushion or during trim cover or OCS system service kit installation to avoid system failure. A deployed side air bag requires replacement of seat back foam pads, trim covers, side air bag modules, brackets and nuts and U-nuts and bolts together with a possible need to replace the seat back frame. Behavior necessary to take out the side air bag module includes first dismantling the front seat and backrest followed by plastic rivet and J-clip detachment and then performing a gentle separation of the seat cushion trim cover from its hook-and-loop strips. The installation process begins with retainer removal of Pin-type wires followed by bolt removal from the side air bag module. When installing new items combine the side air bag module with its module bracket then securely fasten the nuts to 6 Nm (53 lb-in) value and the bolts to 10 Nm (89 lb-in). You must check that the wiring harness does not get trapped then put two hog rings on each window section to attach the backrest trim cover before installing both the J-clips and plastic rivets. Reinstall the front seat followed by SRS system power activation. The OCS system reset should only proceed when the vehicle voltage is within 8.0 to 18.0 volts and the temperature is between 6°C and 36°C and the passenger seat area is unoccupied. The SRS needs verification through air bag warning indicator checks after completing the ignition switch cycling procedure. A scan tool should be used to remove all persisting DTCs from the RCM.
