2009 Ford Mustang Air Bag Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to arm and disarm the air bag system on 2009 Ford Mustang?
A: The air bag system requires you to switch off all vehicle accessories and position the ignition switch at OFF before continuing. Enter the Smart Junction Box through its right-hand lower kick panel access and take out RCM fuse 17 (10A). Keep the ignition in ON position while observing the air bag indicator lights for 30 seconds. Continuous illumination confirms you removed the appropriate fuse. Continue only when the correct fuse does not light up the air bag indicator. Complete all tasks by flipping the ignition switch to OFF. Proceed only after ending power to all back up supplies and allowing a one-minute pause between battery disconnect and start with new components such as air bags on the vehicle's front and side when replacing seats or doors. Turn the ignition to OFF and turn it back to ON while reinstalling the 10A RCM fuse into the SJB then securing the cover. Reinstall the battery ground cable only if all occupants and possible air bag module obstructions are gone. After turning the ignition to ON then OFF mode and waiting 10 seconds followed by ON mode press should result in a continuous air bag warning indicator light for about 6 seconds before disappearing. A fault exists with the air bag when the indicator light does not appear or stays constantly lit instead of flashing at 5Hz. It typically needs a 30-second response time after ignition ON because RCM performs its tests. The system sends 5 groups of 5 beeps through the speakers when both the warning light and air bag system require attention. Use diagnostic scanning equipment to erase all DTCs that display continuously from the air bag control module.
