2008 Lincoln Navigator Steering Shaft Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to Service and Repair the Steering Shaft on 2008 Lincoln Navigator?
A: The service and repair of steering column shaft begins with hoisting the vehicle with NEUTRAL transmission position. The first step requires a proper alignment of steering wheel and front wheels in a straight position followed by turning the ignition switch to OFF and removing the key. The steering column shaft should not rotate during intermediate shaft disconnection to protect the Clock Spring; in case rotation occurs the Clock Spring needs to be readjusted. You should first disconnect the upper steering column shaft from the steering column by removing its bolt before disposal and torque the new bolt to 30 Nm (22 lb-ft) for installation. Disconnect the upper steering column shaft from the lower steering column shaft by taking out a bolt which should then be discarded as you install the new bolt at 48 Nm (35 lb-ft). You must first remove the two bolts before eliminating the dash seal and upper steering column shaft and finally tighten these new bolts to 9 lb-ft (12 Nm). The lower steering column connects to the steering gear through a bolt with subsequent bolt tightening to 30 Nm (22 lb-ft) when reinstalling the part. Reuse of steering column shaft bolts represents a serious threat to vehicle occupants because it can cause steering column shaft detachment when fasteners fail to prevent this issue. Reinstallation of new bolt completion marks the end of this process by following removal step procedures.
