2008 Lincoln Town Car Coil Springs Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to Remove and Replace the Coil Springs in the Shock Absorber Assembly on 2008 Lincoln Town Car?
A: You must begin the coil spring and shock absorber assembly replacement process by taking off the wheel together with its tire. Keep the shock absorber center nut in place while working since its removal will create dangerous spring tension which could lead to severe harm. Before disposal discard all three shock absorber upper mount nuts. The caliper and anchor plate assembly should not be suspended from the brake hose to avoid damage so use mechanic's wire to support the assembly while removing the two bolts. Next, remove the brake disc. Please use the hex-holding feature to stop stud rotation when you discard the stabilizer bar upper link nut followed by stabilizer bar link lower nut and stabilizer bar link. The wheel speed sensor wiring harness retainer must be detached from the wheel knuckle followed by removal and discarding of the upper ball joint nut by using the hex-holding feature. The procedure requires users to remove both the shock absorber lower nut and flag bolt followed by taking out the shock absorber and spring assembly. The shock absorber and spring assembly should be positioned first followed by installation of the lower nut and flag bolt loosely before tightening the upper ball joint nut to 150 Nm (111 lb-ft). The installation involves first reconnecting the wheel speed sensor wiring harness to the wheel knuckle then positioning the stabilizer bar link followed by installing and torquing the two nuts to specified values. The lower nut receives a torque of 55 Nm (41 lb-ft) and the upper nut needs 63 Nm (46 lb-ft). Fasten the brake disc into position first followed by installation of the brake caliper with anchor plate before bolt tightening the anchor plate bolts to 160 Nm (118 lb-ft). First install the wheel with the tire and then secure the shock absorber upper mount nuts with torque of 30 Nm (22 lb-ft). The installation of the shock absorber lower nut requires a torque of 235 Nm (173 lb-ft) while the vehicle rests on both wheel and tire assemblies.
