2008 Lincoln Town Car Differential Cover Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to service and repair the Differential Cover on 2008 Lincoln Town Car?
A: A differential housing cover repair or service starts with placing the vehicle in neutral gear on a hoist position. Start the procedure by removing ten bolts from the differential housing cover then drain the lubricating fluid from inside the housing. The differential housing cover needs to be separated after the lubricant is drained. Both machined surfaces of the differential housing need to be oil-free when cleaning them before the installation step begins. Cover the inside of the rear axle during this cleaning period. A continuous bead of silicone gasket and sealant should be applied to the differential housing cover followed by its installation within 15 minutes to prevent needing new sealant. Wait for one hour until the silicone becomes hard before proceeding to add lubricant to the axle. Position the differential housing cover then fasten its 10 bolts by using a star pattern torque to 45 Nm (33 lb-ft). Additive friction modifier amounting to 118 ml (4 oz) should be poured into the rear axle through its fill plug before cleaning the tool recess for proper plug insertion. The lubricant necessary for the rear axle amounts to 2.37L (5.0 pt) while the fill plug requires tightening to 30 Nm (22 lb-ft).
