2009 Lincoln Town Car Differential Cover Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair the Differential Cover on 2009 Lincoln Town Car?
A: Service and repair work on the differential housing cover begins only when the vehicle sits in neutral position on the hoist. The first step involves removing 10 differential housing cover bolts along with draining the lubricant from the differential housing. The necessary step is to take off the differential housing cover following lubricant draining. Both the differential housing and its cover need clean machined areas free from oil contamination before installation while you should also cover the rear axle internally to prevent contamination when cleaning. A continuous bead of silicone gasket and sealant must be applied to the differential housing cover immediately then installed within 15 minutes to prevent needing new sealant. Silicone-based sealants need an hour of curing time before lubricant addition to the axle becomes possible. Secure the differential housing cover and place its 10 bolts with proper torque at 46 Nm (33 lb-ft). Fasten the axle tag bolt tightly to 31 Nm (23 lb-ft). The requirement is to feed traction-lok axles with additive friction modifier at 118 ml (4 oz). Determine the cleanliness of the tool recess before using the axle fill plug removal tool. Cleaning the recess may be required if any debris remains. The distribution of 2.37L (5.0 pt) lubricant into the rear axle requires installation of the fill plug while applying a torque of 30 Nm (22 lb-ft).
