2008 Lincoln Town Car Steering Column Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to service the deployable steering column on 2008 Lincoln Town Car?
A: The deployable steering column servicing process starts by depowering all components from the supplemental restraint system. Devices that enable access to the instrument panel's electrical connector will be needed because the deployable steering column might need deployment removal. Cut all wires and connectors from the vehicle wire harness then save at least 4 inches for connection when the deployable steering column does not have a hard-wired pigtail. Remove all sheathing materials from wires and peel away insulation from both ends of the sectioned wires. Two 20-gauge minimum wires should be used to make a jumper harness which must be 9.14 meters (30 feet) long with stripped ends on both wires. Bind the wires together at the first end of the jumper harness. Attach each wire ending from the jumper harness to each matching wiring point of the deployable steering column by insulating them against contact. Test points for the deployable steering column need to stay at minimum 9.14 meters (30 feet) away. To deploy the steering column touch the terminals of a 12-volt battery with the disconnected jumper harness wires while following the method above. Replace the deployed steering column only after it has cooled down for at least 10 minutes and follow standard scrap disposal methods.
