2008 Mercury Mountaineer A/C Accumulator Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service the A/C Accumulator on 2008 Mercury Mountaineer?
A: The service process for the suction accumulator starts with refrigerant recovery before removing the PCM then disconnecting the A/C cycling switch electrical connector. Before reinstallation of the suction accumulator bolt secure it tightly at 11 Nm (8 lb-ft). The procedure starts with removing the PCM bracket bolt and continuing with the PCM bracket nut which ultimately allows removal of the PCM bracket. Squeeze out the suction accumulator stud before securing it to 11 Nm (8 lb-ft) torque. The process for disconnecting the suction accumulator-to-compressor line bracket nut at the condenser-to-evaporator line bracket only applies to 4.6L vehicles. First disconnect the suction accumulator by unfastening its bracket bolt and removing the suction accumulator before unfastening both suction accumulator fitting nuts to remove the fittings while discarding the O-ring seals. Reinstalling the fittings requires an 8 Nm (71 lb-in) torque setting while adding new O-ring seals followed by PAG oil lubrication of the refrigeration system with the correct amount. Evacuate the space and perform leak testing while the refrigeration system receives its correct charge. Because of its sensitivity to outside air exposure the suction accumulator installation should occur last during A/C component service when multiple components are being addressed. Installation of the shipping caps must happen only when fittings are ready for connection yet evacuation needs immediate start since delayed measures allow desiccant damage from condensation. Replacement of a suction accumulator becomes necessary when a failed A/C compressor leads to physical contamination or when damages from leaks or moisture contamination occur because of an extended period of exposure to atmospheric pressure. The suction accumulator should stay in place if there exists no positive refrigerant pressure before making repairs.
