2008 Mercury Mountaineer Control Arm Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to service and repair the upper control arm on 2008 Mercury Mountaineer?
A: The process of servicing and repairing the upper control arm starts with measuring the hub-to-fender lip distance with the vehicle in a level position. Set a suitable jack under the wheel knuckle before raising the suspension until reaching the established measurement. The first step is to remove both the upper arm outboard bolt and outboard nut followed by their disposal. The inboard nut functions as a flagnut to establish rear camber thus you need to replace it with a non-flagnut piece for adjustment purposes. Both the upper arm inside bolt and flagnut need removal before you can extract the upper arm. Consider positioning the upper arm at its intended place before installing a new inboard bolt together with a non-flagnut and torquing them to 250 Nm (185 lb-ft). Instal the outboard bolt on the upper arm while facing towards the front side to protect your wheels before putting new bolts and nuts which require 225 Nm (166 lb-ft) torque. Complete the procedure by lowering the suspension and then remove the jack while performing a rear end alignment check followed by proper adjustments to restore correct alignment.
