2009 Ford E-150 Leaf Spring Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the leaf spring on 2009 Ford E-150?
A: Start servicing or repairing leaf springs by first removing the wheel with its tire while simultaneously using a suitable jack to stabilize the rear axle. Workers should begin by discarding the shock absorber lower nut and bolt then progress to unfastening the four U-bolt nuts and the plate before removing the two U-bolts. The leaf spring assembly will become removable after removing front bracket flagnut and bolt and shackle-to-bracket flagnut and bolt. Before disposal, remove the shackle-to-leaf spring nut along with bolt and shackle from the system. Install the leaf spring shackle and use new fixing hardware before tightening them to achieve proper tightness. First install a new bolt with flag nut between the spring shackle and rear bracket before tightening the assembly until it becomes secure. Afterward install the new spring-to-front bracket bolt with flag nut and make it snug. The correct U-bolt clamp load and retention requires verifying that A to B distance measures 107 mm (4.21 in) ± 3 mm (0.12 in) for E150/E250/E350 vehicles and 112 mm (4.41 in) ± 3 mm (0.12 in) for E450 vehicles when installing new U-bolts. Attach the spring upper plate to the U-bolt and fasten its nuts until the components become tight. Put the new shock absorber lower elements in position then tighten the bolt and attached nut until the components achieve tightness before replacing wheel and tire assembly. Let the vehicle drop until its wheel assemblies are positioned at normal driving height. Apply torque of 133 Nm (98 lb-ft) to the new shackle-to-rear bracket bolt as well as to the shackle-to-leaf spring nut. For the spring-to-front bracket bolt torque to 350 Nm (258 lb-ft). The U-bolt nuts require an X-type pattern sequence using the following tightening steps: Stage 1 (50 Nm or 37 lb-ft), Stage 2 (100 Nm or 74 lb-ft), Stage 3 (150 Nm or 111 lb-ft), Stage 4 (200 Nm or 148 lb-ft) and Stage 5 (225 Nm or 166 lb-ft). The absolute torque for the shock absorber lower nut should be set to 103 Nm (76 lb-ft).
