    A: Start leaf spring maintenance by dismounting wheels and tires followed by installing a suitable axle support beneath the rear section. Start the process by removing the shock absorber lower nut and bolt. After that, remove the four U-bolt nuts, plate and the two U-bolts. Proceed by removing the leaf spring front bracket bolt together with its flagnut and later move to the leaf spring shackle-to-bracket bolt and flagnut before disconnecting the leaf spring assembly. Extraction of the shackle-to-leaf spring nut together with its bolt and shackle must be performed. The leaf spring shackle must be correctly positioned before installing its bolt and nut while you tighten the parts until they become snug. Fasten the shackle-to-rear bracket bolt then the flag nut until snug followed by the installation of spring-to-front bracket bolt and its matching flag nut until tight. You should measure the distance between points A and B as 107 mm (4.21 inches) ± 3 mm (0.12 inches) for E150/E250/E350 vehicles while measuring 112 mm (4.41 inches) ± 3 mm (0.12 inches) for E450 vehicles during new U-bolt installation to achieve proper clamp force and part retention. After positioning the spring upper plate install U-bolts along with nuts which require tight fitting. You should install the lower shock absorber nut and bolt while tightening them until they become snug prior to reinstalling the wheel and tire. Drop the vehicle until its tires match the normal position with the ground at curb height. Tighten the shackle-to-rear bracket bolt to 133 Nm (98 lb-ft) while the shackle-to-leaf spring nut reaches 133 Nm (98 lb-ft) and the spring-to-front bracket bolt reaches 350 Nm (258 lb-ft). The U-bolt nuts must be tightened at five stages using an X-type pattern until they reach the following torque settings: Stage 1 - 50 Nm (37 lb-ft), Stage 2 - 100 Nm (74 lb-ft), Stage 3 - 150 Nm (111 lb-ft), Stage 4 - 200 Nm (148 lb-ft), Stage 5 - 225 Nm (166 lb-ft). Secure the shock absorber lower nut by tightening it to 103 Nm (76 lb-ft).
