2009 Ford Explorer Camshaft Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to remove and replace the camshaft on 2009 Ford Explorer?
A: You must begin camshaft replacement by taking out all the roller followers from this component. First use a wrench to remove the nut before placing the routing harness bracket on the side. Perform the timing procedure for both right-hand (RH) and left-hand (LH) camshafts during the service of any camshaft. The crankshaft should be turned clockwise until the No. 1 cylinder reaches Top Dead Center (TDC) while stopping all counterclockwise rotation to protect the damper crankshaft sensor speed wheel along with preventing incorrect engine timing. Fasten the supplied Crankshaft TDC Timing Tool onto the damper unit until it touches the engine block. First remove the hydraulic timing chain tensioner from the RH side while discarding the washer. Mount the Camshaft Sprocket Holding Tool along with the Adapter for 303-564 behind the RH cylinder head before tightening its top two clamp bolts to 10 Nm (89 lb-in). The left-hand threaded RH camshaft sprocket bolt needs loosening using the Torque Wrench Extension together with the Camshaft Sprocket Nut Socket until you can remove the bolt and put the sprocket aside. Remove the hydraulic timing chain tensioner while discarding its washer for the LH side of the engine. Turn the accessory drive belt tensioner to the counter-clockwise direction for removing the A/C compressor and power steering pump pulleys from the accessory drive belt. The procedure requires the removal of two bolts before you set aside the combination of A/C compressor and power steering pump bracket. Attach the Camshaft Sprocket Holding Tool while placing the Adapter for 303-564 in front of the LH camshaft before tightening its top clamp bolts to 10 Nm (89 lb-in). Remove the bolt and set aside the sprocket when finished. Note down the original position of the camshaft bearing caps before you remove the eight specified bolts which will free the caps. Clean engine oil will serve to lubricate the camshaft journal bearing surfaces on the cylinder head combined with the camshaft journals and camshaft bearing caps. The camshaft will receive installation after this treatment. Follow the original installation positions for the camshaft bearing caps. The camshaft should be cleanly rotated after bolting awards. Install all camshaft bearing caps placed in their original positions along with eight bolts per set by first applying torque to 6 Nm (53 lb-in) and then increasing to 16 Nm (142 lb-in). Install the RH camshaft sprocket before installing the bolt loosely to prevent engine timing errors. At this time check that the camshaft gear moves freely on the shaft without bolt torque. Both the RH and the LH sides need to undergo a free camshaft gear rotation check before moving on to bolt tightening. Finally, time the camshafts.
