2009 Ford Explorer Sport Trac Automatic Transmission Filter Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair the In-Line Automatic Transmission Filter on 2009 Ford Explorer Sport Trac?
A: A hoist-mounted vehicle in neutral position serves as the first step before proceeding with in-line transmission fluid filter servicing and repair. The installation of a new filter should be done when there was an overhaul on the transmission and the vehicle included an in-line transmission fluid filter. The installation of a new in-line transmission fluid filter kit becomes necessary when the vehicle did not have an in-line transmission fluid filter present. The installation of new filters or kits should only proceed when performing internal transmission repairs. A Ford-authorized remanufactured transmission needs an installation of a fresh new in-line transmission fluid filter. Start by detaching the secondary latch from the transmission fluid cooler connector before using the transmission disconnect tool to do the same. The tube section between the second flare needs removal from the transmission fluid cooler accompanied by clean-up and de-burring of the cut end. The tubing ferrule hose assembly connector must be installed onto the cooler tube before finger-tightening the ferrule nut and finishing the installation by tightening it by one and a half turns. Install the new transmission fluid filter that features a bypass valve having the red arrow facing out from the cooler toward the transmission. Remove the section of transmission fluid cooler hose. The design angle for hoses entering the filter should not surpass 60 degrees since such bends can cause fluid blockage. First connect the filter end of the cooler hose with tight clamps and follow by linking the other hose end to the tubing ferrule assembly with two clamps which should be secured. Clean a portion of the transmission fluid pan before installing the sticker and follow up with fluid refilling and operational verification procedure then inspect the filter for leakage points.
