    Q: How to Service and Repair the In-Line Automatic Transmission Filter on Ford Explorer Sport Trac?
    A: The first step for this task is to place the vehicle in NEUTRAL position while using a hoist for support. The installation of a new in-line fluid filter should be performed when the transmission received an overhaul and came with an in-line fluid filter or when installing an in-line fluid filter kit. The installation of a new in-line fluid filter kit should be performed when no filter was originally fitted. Do not place any in-line filter or filter kit when dealing with non-internal transmissions. Transmission installation requires the use of the filter supplied with new and authorized remanufactured Ford transmissions. Follow the steps by taking off retainer clips from cooler lines while also disconnecting the lower transmission cooler tube fitting. Cut off the return line section then clean and debur all cut ends of steel tubing. Before applying the ferrule nut, ensure the cooler tube fits correctly into the fitting. Then tighten the nut with additional 1-1/2 turns beyond the initial finger-tight fit. The filter requires installation into the fluid cooler return line while its red arrow must point in the direction of transmission flow moving away from the cooler and toward the transmission to safeguard against internal transmission harm. Installation of rubber hoses or steel tubing needs to avoid any bend exceeding 60 degrees leading into the filter. Place hose of appropriate length to implement the filter installation before locking the clamps. After installing the retainer clips on the cooler lines proceed to reconnect the lower transmission cooler tube fitting. Clean one section on the transmission fluid pan before sticking a label to it. The process concludes by filling the transmission with new automatic transmission fluid followed by confirmation of correct operation and leak inspection on the filter.
