- Q: How to Remove and Replace Coil Springs in the Front Suspension of a Rear-Wheel Drive on 2009 Ford Explorer Sport Trac?A: The first step to replace the front suspension coil spring in a rear-wheel drive vehicle requires measuring the distance from the hub's center to the fender trim using level ground conditions. Remove the wheel and tire after discarding the three shock absorber upper mount nuts. The stabilizer bar link requires removal by using a suitable jack to hold the lower control arm near its lower ball joint before discarding both the stabilizer bar link nut and grommet. Unfasten the shock absorber lower bolt as well as the flag nut before removing the upper ball joint nut. A C-Frame with Screw tool must be utilized to disconnect the upper ball joint from the wheel knuckle in a manner that avoids damaging the ball joint boot. The shock and spring assembly should be taken off by decreasing the suspension height. The first step for installation calls for the addition of new shock absorber and spring assembly.
