2009 Ford Explorer Sport Trac Starter Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to service the starter motor on a 4.0L SOHC engine on 2009 Ford Explorer Sport Trac?
A: A 4.0L sohc vehicle starter motor service begins with placing the vehicle in neutral position on a hoist. The battery ground cable must be disconnected first because electrical shorts can generate burns as a safety hazard. Start by removing the starter motor solenoid terminal cover followed by unfastening the B-terminal cable using its nut before disconnecting the cable. Secure this cable at 12 Nm (106 lb-in) when reinstalling it. First disconnect the S-terminal cable by removing its nut after which you can tighten it to 6 Nm (53 lb-in) during reassembly. The procedure for ground cable nut removal includes setting it aside and installing with 20 Nm (177 lb-in) torque. Disconnect the bolt followed by the stud bolt and pull out the starter motor before putting it back in place with a 25 Nm (18 lb-ft) torque. The installer should first tighten the upper bolt then proceed to tighten the lower fastener during reinstallation.
