2009 Ford Explorer Timing Cover Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to service and repair the timing cover on 2009 Ford Explorer?
A: Service and repair of the timing cover begins with disconnecting the battery ground cable while draining the cooling system. The first task involves uninstalling the crankshaft front seal then you must detach the wiring harness bracket from the front cover while also removing the five oil pan-to-front cover bolts. You need to disconnect both the lower radiator hose along with a bolt for drive belt tensioner and the heater hose from the coolant pump. The service sequence requires disconnecting the Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor electrical connector followed by action to remove the nut for generator B+ terminal separation while detaching the generator electrical connector with its wiring harness retainer. Managedbolt removal of the generator bracket begins with taking out generator bracket bolts before proceeding to the coil bracket-to-A/C compressor and power steering pump bracket bolt, and finishing with the four bolts which secure the A/C compressor and power steering pump bracket. The first step involves removing the CKP sensor wiring harness retainers as well as disconnecting the electrical connector of the Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor. Then cut off the upper radiator hose from the thermostat housing. First disconnect the heater hose from the thermostat housing then remove the thermostat housing by releasing the bypass hose clamp from the coolant pump end while removing its three securing bolts. The correct positions of the stud bolts need to be marked before removing all ten bolts, the engine front cover and gasket, with discarding the gasket. Silicone gasket remover and a plastic scraping tool are essential for cleaning gasket mating surfaces but all tools must avoid using metal scrapers and abrasives. Position the new front cover gasket onto the surfaces and distribute silicone gasket and sealant at the two designated areas on both the front cover and oil pan and engine block mating surfaces. Install stud bolts in their original placements on the engine front cover before affixing the front cover with ten bolts and tightening them to 19 Nm (168 lb-in). Connect the thermostat housing while tightening its bolts to 11 Nm (97 lb-in) torque setting followed by installing the bypass hose clamp then setting the upper radiator hose and heater hose to join with the thermostat housing. The ECT sensor electrical connector must be connected while installing new wiring harness retainers and positioning CKP sensor wires before finalizing the CKP sensor electrical connector. Place the A/C compressor along with the power steering pump bracket while securing its four bolts at a torque force of 42 Nm and 31 lb-ft and finally tighten the ignition coil bracket-to-A/C compressor and power steering pump bracket bolt to a torque of ten Nm and 89 lb-in. The generator bracket requires three bolts which should be tightened to 42 Nm (31 lb-ft) before connecting the generator electrical connector and installing the wiring harness retainers. Install the generator B+ terminal while tightening the corresponding nut to 8 Nm (71 lb-in) before attaching the heater hose to the coolant pump. Position the accessory drive belt tensioner before installing its bolt while tightening it to 47 Nm (35 lb-ft) followed by attaching the lower radiator hose. Fasten the five cylinder block cradle-to-front cover bolts to 14 Nm (124 lb-in) torque and position the wiring harness bracket before installing its retaining nut correctly to 20 Nm (177 lb-in). To complete the installation reinstall the crankshaft front seal and reattach the battery ground cable while filling the engine cooling system.
