  • Q: How to remove and replace the LH camshaft on 2009 Ford F-350 Super Duty?
    A: The first step in LH camshaft replacement is positioning the crankshaft damper spoke at 12 o'clock and the timing mark indentation at 1 o'clock. Remove the LH valve cover. The engine suffers damage when bearing caps are not returned to their original positions thus proper recording of their locations becomes essential. Unfasten the specified sequence of 6 bolts while removing both the 3 bearing caps and the balance shaft. The technician loosens the LH camshaft sprocket bolt one complete turn only with hand tools to maintain bolt safety. Both camshafts must be serviced without crankshaft rotation while ensuring the exhaust lobe of cylinder No. 6 camshaft sits on the exhaust stroke. To prevent engine damage maintain the original positions of the 4 camshaft roller followers when removing them. After removing the roller followers using a Valve Spring Compressor you should keep the valve keepers from falling off. Turn the crankshaft clockwise until both the spoke on the crankshaft damper aligns with the 6 o'clock position and the timing mark sits at 7 o'clock. Fasten the Timing Chain Locking Tool square to the timing chain and engine block while it must stay secure until the assembly finishes. Begin by removing the two bolts from the front thrust camshaft bearing cap until it is free to remove. Subsequently eliminate the ten remaining bolts and camshaft bearing caps before cleaning all components for inspection. Perform two-step tightening of the camshaft sprocket bolt starting at 40 Nm (30 lb-ft) and proceeding to 90 degrees. Apply lubrication the balance shaft journals before rotating the crankshaft until it reaches the proper alignment of marks that indicate balance shaft timing. Position the balance shaft onto its journals. Place the 3 balance shaft bearing caps onto their original spots and secure all 6 bolts to 10 Nm (89 lb-in). The LH valve cover needs to be installed as the final step.
