2009 Ford Flex Shock Absorber Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to Remove and Replace the Front Shock Absorber and Spring Assembly on 2009 Ford Flex?
A: A proper start to front strut and spring assembly maintenance involves first unlocking the steering wheel. First loosen the upper strut mount nuts before you eliminate wheel and tire assembly while maintaining the wheel hub nut in place. Upon removal detach the brake disc while you discard the tie-rod end nut to split the tie rod from the wheel knuckle. Remove the front wheel sensor harness from the strut and remove the stabilizer bar link upper nut followed by the bolt and wheel sensor from the wheel knuckle while safely placing the sensor aside. You should use a crowfoot wrench to remove and dispose of the lower ball joint nut while slowly pushing the lower arm downward to remove the ball joint from the wheel knuckle. During this process maintain protection of the ball joint seal to avoid damage. Take preventive measures to stop the halfshaft from leaving its position outward before applying the Front Wheel Hub Remover for driving out the halfshaft from the wheel bearing and hub. Use a wrench to remove the four strut mount nuts at the top before drawing out the wheel knuckle containing both the strut and spring assembly. The mechanic removes the strut-to-wheel knuckle nut along with flagbolt and disconnects the wheel knuckle from the strut and spring assembly. When installing the wheel knuckle on top of the strut and spring users must install new strut-to-wheel knuckle nuts and flagbolts while tightening the nut to 175 Nm (129 lb-ft). Install the four new upper strut mount nuts to a loose torque then place the halfshaft in a level position before installation into the wheel bearing and hub. To mount the ball joint stud you should lower the lower arm carefully into the wheel knuckle area and fasten the new lower ball joint nut with a crowfoot wrench until torque reaches 150 Nm (111 lb-ft). The wheel speed sensor needs to be positioned while the bolt is installed before tightening it to 8 Nm (71 lb-in) and after connecting the wheel speed sensor harness to the strut. The stabilizer bar link upper nut requires a torque of 55 Nm (41 lb-ft) before the tie-rod end stud should be inserted into the wheel knuckle followed by new tie-rod end nut installation with a torque of 115 Nm (85 lb-ft). Put the disc in place before removing the ground-based front wheel hub nut usage; use the discarded hub nut to set the halfshaft and torque it to 350 Nm (258 lb-ft) before discarding it. Apply a replacement wheel hub nut immediately but no longer than five minutes after starting installation and make the torque to 350 Nm (258 lb-ft). To finish the installation process you must place the wheel and tire then fasten the four upper strut mount nuts to 35 Nm (26 lb-ft).
