2009 Ford Focus Alternator Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to service and repair the alternator on 2009 Ford Focus?
A: The first step for alternator service and repair requires suspension of the vehicle on a hoist and battery disconnection while placing it in neutral. The service procedure begins by disconnecting the generator electrical connector followed by removing the RH halfshaft then removing the 3 bolts securing the center support bracket. Using a clockwise motion on the front end accessory drive (FEAD) belt tensioner you can remove the generator drive pulley belt while setting it aside. First release both retainers to take out the lower generator air duct. Then set the protective cover to the side, take out the nut before moving the generator B+ terminal aside. The procedure starts with removing two generator nuts before removing the two generator studs then the generator bolt until you remove the generator entirely. Prior to generator installation remove its upper air duct along with the bolt. When installing the generator upper air duct with the bolt tighten them to 12 Nm (106 lb-in). Screw in the generator bolt manually without applying torque at this time. Install the 2 generator studs first before tightening them to 24 Nm (18 lb-ft). Then proceed to install the 2 generator nuts and torque them to 47 Nm (35 lb-ft). Position the generator B+ terminal on the generator while you tighten the nut to 17 Nm (150 lb-in) after which you should put the protective cover on the nut. Put in the lower generator air duct and turn the FEAD belt tensioner to the right before installing the FEAD belt once more. Mount the accessory drive splash shield into its place while tightening the 2 screws to 5 Nm (44 lb-in). The center support bracket needs to be refitted with three bolts which should be tightened to 30 Nm (22 lb-ft). The RH halfshaft follows this step, finished by connecting the generator electrical connector along with the battery.
